wild horses

A 2004 photo assignment for Sun Valley Magazine introduced me to the wild horses of Idaho. What I came to learn was extraordinary, and changed the course of my life.

After spending time with them I shot two distinct kinds of photographs: families in their day-to-day life, knowing that most of these horses would soon be rounded up, and the more formal life-size portraits printed on fabric that became the Ghost Herd. When I got close, the horses would stand alert, trying to assess the threat of the woman with the lens pointed at them. The look they gave me is direct, and haunting.
